TRADITIONS OF ROERO
The cold winters and abundant snowfalls of Roero have always been a time for fun activities for both children and adults. The snow didn’t melt for months at a time, slowing the perception of time and also the rythm of work. Up to the 50s many natural slopes in the villages became sites of sledding races, called Slesà. The name Slesà refers to the frozen slopes along which people hurtled down on any kind of improvised sled.
There were various types of sleds, among which the “Sleson” made of wood with metal blades underneath and the “Lese” simple planks of wood usually used by the women to wash clothes. The showgrounds were carefully prepped every evening, by leveling the snow and pouring water on it that would freeze during the night. Not everyone was happy with the commotions and the loud noises, in addition to the inability to use the frozen roads, so people often sabotaged the frozen tracks by pouring boiling water or cinder on them. To make sure this didn’t happen the players organized night patrols, armed with wine bottles and glasses.
