The woods awaken, the sandy cliffs are tinged with fresh green and the canyons open up to unexpected views.

Here you can find over 250 km of trails, suitable for all levels, from family walks to challenging treks. The Sentiero dell’Acino trail winds through vineyards and orchards with sweeping views of the Langhe. The ‘Notturni nelle Rocche’ events, evening walks through the Rocche with live entertainment, begin in June.

The Rocche can also be explored by MTB and e-bike: in spring the trails are cool, the leaves start sprouting on the trees and the views through the crisp, fresh air are breathtaking. The Valle delle Rocche Outdoor Centre in Montà rents bikes and offers guided tours of the area.

Food and Wine

Wines and wineries in the Roero

The ‘Open Cellar Doors’ initiative brings the season to life on three occasions: at Easter, during the Vinum event in Alba, and on Republic Day. These are excellent opportunities to visit the cellars, meet the producers and discover the region’s wines.

Roero is the land of Nebbiolo, Barbera and Arneis. Arneis, a native grape variety of Roero, is a fresh and fragrant white wine that best captures the essence of this season, perfect with local cured meats and cheeses.

The wines we produce on the estate are Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, Piemonte Barbera DOC and Caio, made from Brachetto grapes. If you’d like to visit our winery and discover our wines, we can arrange a tasting tour on request.

In spring, the region comes to life at the table as well. The first Roero asparagus appear in the markets as early as April: tender and with a delicate flavour, it’s one of the region’s most prized crops. In late spring, the strawberries from Sommariva Perno make their entrance; recognised as a typical local produce, they are small, fragrant, and best eaten straight from the plant.

Culture and History

Towns and castles waiting to be discovered

The Roero region is dotted with medieval towns perched on the hills, often dominated by castles and towers that bear witness to centuries of history. With the air still cool and the golden afternoon light bathing the landscape, they are the perfect place for a leisurely stroll.

Guarene, awarded the Touring Club’s Orange Flag and ranked among Italy’s most beautiful villages, offers a panoramic view of the hills and the River Tanaro. Govone, with its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Royal Castle, opens its gardens in spring to the sight of wild tulips in bloom. Monticello d’Alba, Magliano Alfieri, Santo Stefano Roero: every town has its own history, its own church, its own castle.

For those interested in nature and art, the ‘Sentieri dei Frescanti’ reopens at the beginning of May. It’s a trail that connects the country churches and chapels nestled between hills and vineyards across nine municipalities in the Roero, each one displaying frescoes dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries.

Traditions ad Events

Spring events in Roero

Spring brings with it a calendar of events rooted in local tradition. Some have been held for centuries, others are more recent, but each one tells a genuine story about Roero and its people.

Cantè j’Euv is the quintessential Easter festival of Roero: groups of young people travel from courtyard to courtyard singing to ask for eggs, an ancient tradition that is still practised today in several municipalities. Porté Disné, at the end of May, is an enogastronomic walk between Montà and Canale through the hills that connect them, where you walk, eat and drink in good company.

In June, the wineries open to the public for Republic Day, with tours and tastings throughout the region.

Check our Roero events calendar →

Your starting point

Cascina Ponchietta in spring

From Cascina Ponchietta, the Roero is right on your doorstep.
