Autumn is the most eagerly awaited season in Roero. The woods, hills and hazelnut groves fill with warm colors and the morning air brings with it that precious silence that only October can offer.
It’s the time when the region and everything in it,the colours, the flavours, the events are at its best.
Nature and Landscape
Autumn foliage in Roero
Between October and November, the hills of the Roero come alive with colour. In the Langhe and Roero, Nebbiolo is the last grape to be harvested, often in the second half of October, and the spectacle of the autumn foliage lasts well into November.
The Ecomuseo delle Rocche del Roero’s network of trails winds through vineyards, hazelnut groves, woods and truffle grounds, the towns on the hilltops emerging from the morning mist. Sunny days make every view worthy of a photograph.
The Rocche can also be explored by MTB and e-bike: in autumn, the foliage transforms every descent into a feast for the eyes, with golden hazelnut groves and vineyards changing colour day by day. The Valle delle Rocche Outdoor Centre in Montà rents bikes and organises guided cycling tours.

Seasonal Flavours
Truffles, chestnuts and hazelnuts
The official season for the white truffle of Alba begins on the 21st of September and ends on the 31st of December. The International d’Alba White Truffle Fair takes place every Saturday and Sunday from October to December, just a few kilometres from Cascina Ponchietta.
During this season in Roero you’ll find the ‘Castagna della Madonna, an early-ripening local variety of chestnut, among the first of the season to appear in the markets. Another prized delicacy are the Tonde Gentili delle Langhe hazelnuts, the very same we use to make our hazelnut meringue cake for your breakfast.
Culture and Towns
Towns, castles and wineries in autumn
In autumn, the atmosphere in the towns of Roero grows more intimate and quiet and the castles dotting the hilltops reveal their imposing, ancient presence. Govone, Guarene, Monticello d’Alba, Magliano Alfieri – each town is well worth a visit, with parks and gardens that hold a special charm at this time of year.
During the Truffle Fair, the local wineries open their doors every weekend from October to December for tours and wine tastings. From November, the Royal Castle of Govone, a Savoy residence and UNESCO World Heritage Site, comes alive with the Magical Christmas Village: markets, lights and shows that bring the village to life until the Epiphany.
