Le Rocche del Roero

The canyons running through the Roero hills are not natural, or so the legends say. Someone carved them in the dark of night.

The Rocche are deep chasms with sandy walls that open abruptly among the rolling hills of the Roero, a geological phenomenon of erosion dating back to the glacial era.

The ridge of the Rocche stretches for about 32 kilometers and encompasses the eight villages that were built on its peaks. It’s a deep natural fracture that from the territory of Pocapaglia reaches that of Cisterna d’Asti.

The Rocche can reach drops of hundreds of meters and are often shaped in jagged spires with fascinating and imposing forms; the soil that forms the Rocche’s stretch of land is composed of marls and clays, materials that had been deposited onto the ground when it was still seabed, at a time when a large part of the Roero area was still submerged by the Mediterranean Sea: even today, it is easy to find fossilized remains of fish, shells, urchins and marine vegetation in the loose soil.

The phenomenon that led to the formation of the Rocche is known as “ the Tanaro capture”: around 200,000 years ago the course of the Tanaro River was diverted by the headwater retreat of another stream, thus changing its streambed. All confluent streams adapted to the new hydrographic conditions: the small streams of the Roero began to recede toward the new Tanaro bed, marking the sandy soils of the “Astigiano” (the Asti territory) with deep chasms and gullies.

Due to their wild and hostile appearance, the Rocche have always influenced people’s collective imagination and are often associated with stories of demons and “masche” (Piedmontese witches).

According to legend, they were created by Beelzebub himself in the course of a single night.

It is said that local feudal lords had invoked the devil himself to create a mighty defensive stronghold in the lands located at the confluence of the Tanaro and Stura rivers. To render it unassailable, the territory had to be reshaped and elevated.

Beelzebub accepted the request in exchange for the souls of those who died in battle, went to the towns of the Rocche holding a gigantic spade and began to shovel.

His colossal efforts created an insurmountable barrier for the feudal lord’s enemies but, at the same time, left behind a wild and inhospitable landscape that man would find difficult to inhabit.

Myth aside, in the villages perched on the peaks of the Rocche, one can see how this ever-changing geological phenomenon affects everyday life: due to the constant erosion, many houses are now on the edge of the ravine and the villages hang in the balance, teetering on the edge of a tenuous environmental equilibrium.
