Bringing Lunch to the Farmers

Around midday, women and children left the town, lunch baskets in hand, headed to the fields. Here the families gathered to share a meal and rest in the shade of the ciabòt.

“Portè disnè” was the dialectal expression once used to signify the peasant ritual of “bringing lunch” to family members working in the fields or the vineyards.

At around noon, droves of women and children would swarm from the village to the countryside holding baskets of food to be delivered to their husbands, fathers, grandfathers and brothers.

The outdoor lunch could be eaten under the shade of a tree by the vineyards, or set up inside a “ciabòt”.

The ciabòt are small brick buildings, or sometimes simple sheds made of wood and branches, created to preside over the plots of land: they served as shelter from the weather, as a space to keep work tools or as a place for conviviality and rest during the hottest hours of the day. Sometimes the ciabòt, being far away from prying eyes, even became the ideal hiding places for passionate love escapades!

Having lunch in the ciabòt or in the open fields was and still is a farmer’s custom.

Omelets, salami, cheeses, salads with wild herbs, bell peppers and “bagnetto verde”: these are just some of the simple but delicious dishes that could be eaten cold, accompanied by good wine which was kept chilled in the nearby well during work hours.

The peasant ritual of “Portè Disnè” is celebrated still today through a 20 years old initiative held in the Roero area: a “food and wine” walk between the villages of Montà and Canale, held on the last Sunday of May.

The event revolves around an itinerant lunch along a pleasant route through nature, in the jovial and festive atmosphere that the people of this land know how to create, with the lively traditional music that has always accompanied the festivities.
